A Season To Stand United

There is a saying, "There is no better time than the present." And another saying, "Don't put off tomorrow what you can do today?" But I think the one resonates most with me is the age old adage... "There is an appointed time for everything, a time for every activity under the heavens."

Those wise words always makes me stop, ponder and ask,  "What activity is most needed by my family right now?"

Let All Things Take Place In It's Season

I've learned decades ago that all things are best accomplished in their appointed time and season. With life's many challenges you can easily miss the ideal opportunity to celebrate life's transitions with the family. And when that time is missed you can't get it back as much as you wish you could.

A Season To Stand United

With all that's going on in the world today, this is a season to stand united as a family and community. Opportunities to make up for lost time pass by too quickly. All we can do is plan ahead and do our best make something positive, meaningful and empowering happen, especially when it's most needed. So what time is it?

This favorite inspired maxim continues...

"There is a time to plant, a time to heal, a time to build up.

There is a time to weep and a time to laugh. a time to gather and a time to dance.

A time to search and a time embrace. A time to sew together.

A time to be silent, and a time to speak.

A time for peace and a time to love."

- Excerpts from The book of Ecclesiastes chapter 3.

This Is That Time!

Our families need to be closer now than ever before. There can be no better time to bring the family together. To laugh and cry together, and most of all give assurance of your love and support. And when the time is right, plan a family reunion and widen your circle of love.

Tips For Your Next Family Reunion

"There is a time to plant." Plant a family garden or tree. Plant seeds of truth in the heart of your loved ones.

"There is a time to heal." Express your love for those who are gone but not forgotten.

"  "There is a time to build up." Build a family tree. Take the time to plan family activities that leave everyone refreshed, hopeful, loved, and in good spirits.

"There is a time to gathera time to laugh and a time to dance." Songs, dance and laughter build family bonds and a strong house.

"A time to search and a time embrace." Find and extend your family roots and branches.

"A time to sew together." Make a family history quilt.

"A time to be silent, and a time to speak." Make a family documentary video filled interviews, photos, music, poetry and take a look back on previous family gathers and milestones.

A time for peace and a time to love." Give the kind of honor that builds bridges,  heals old wounds, and renews friendships.

It's a bit nippy out there these days. The entire world could use one big fat family reunion right now.  May you and yours fair well, stay safe and keep the home fires burning.

November - Family Reunion Planning Month

What? 2017 is almost on its way out? How could that be? Where did the time go? Did I collect enough memories? My head is spinning from the sheer speed of time passing me by. O well. They say the older you get the faster time flies - but this?  Did I even put a dent in this year?

If there is one thing I've learned, it's this: History will be made with or without our contribution.  To change history for the better is perhaps one of the greatest achievements there is. Making legacy of life and granting the next generation a heritage worthy of pride and celebration.  The key to making those achievements stick is knowing how to celebrate them.  Think family history documentary, complete with family interviews, a walk down memory lane while visiting old stomping grounds, schools, and other history locals as well as genealogy research and DNA reports.

What better way to present and celebrate your family history than an annual family reunion gathering.

Your identity is in the strength and wisdom of your belief system. Reaching out to family as family reaches out to the community to improve relations, the quality of life and empower a community goes a long way to building strong family ties. November and December are the ideal months to focus on the contributions your family has made toward self-empowerment, the community, business and good spiritual health.

November is Annual Family Reunion Planning Month. That said, now is the time to start planning your next memorable family reunion. Wondering how to get started? Motivating Follow-Up Tips

Some planners schedule follow-up meetings over lunch or dinner or before a special event or family gathering.

Many planners keep a special calendar of family events such as anniversaries, graduations, parties, school plays, concerts and shows that family members are involved in so they will have something of mutual interest to spark the follow-up conversation. After asking how everyone in the household is doing focus the conversation on how well the family reunion event is coming. Praise specific committee members who are making good progress with tasks.

Close the follow-up by expressing appreciation for their important contribution to the event. Let them know that thanks to them things will go smoothly and that you can relax knowing they have the task at hand.

If time is a factor simply make a few phone calls. If one on one conversation with each committee member just isn't practical, send text messages or email messages that capture the sentiment of the suggestions given above.

Email Follow-Up

If using email to follow-up, attach the committee task worksheet and ask them to reply with an update on how the task is coming along. You will find the subcommittee departmental task worksheets in Fimark's award winning Family Reunion Planner Workbook, Guide, and Keepsake, available at Amazon.com

If there is no reply within a reasonable amount of time follow-up with a phone call to confirm the email was received. Ask about the progress they are making with assigned tasks and tactfully offer some helpful suggestions that may help the assignee to complete the task.

Timing Is Everything

Lunchtime is a great time to start sending those follow-up emails out. You're likely to get several immediate responses shortly after lunch hour. Commend those who respond and boast about those who completed their tasks in a timely manner. Take the time to find out how, and pass it on to the rest of the team. Show confidence that all tasks will be completed soon and keep everyone inspired and excited about the upcoming event.

Happy family reunion planning!

November is Annual Family Reunion Planning Month

November is here with a bang. This month history will be made. But what about your family history?
November and December are the ideal months to focus on the contributions your family has made
toward self-empowerment, the community, business and good spiritual health.

Corporate identity is not true identity. True identity begins and ends with family. It means knowing who you are, where you came from and establishing traditions that are far reaching and accomplish a purpose bigger than yourself.

Your identity is in strength and wisdom of your belief system. Your family is not restricted to one race. We each have so many more fathers and mothers from so different parts of the world than we know. It is broad and embraces many cultures, walks of life and ethnic groups. Knowing this humbles us and opens us up to endless possibilities and unencumbered love. Share this with your family and watch them grow.

November is Annual Family Reunion Planning Month. That said, now is the time to start planning your next memorable family reunion. Consider a family genealogy presentations featuring DNA revealing reunion event. It will be a journey you will never forget. Wondering how to get started? Read about the Genealogy themed family reunion program in Fimark's Family Reunion Planner guidebook.

The Walk To Remember

Walking is one of the healthiest activities you can take up. Especially outdoor walking while taking deep breaths of fresh air and basking in the sunlight. Vitamin D from the sun does amazing things for the brain, body, and overall state-of-mind. Feeling down? Take a walk. Need to loosen up and think. Take a walk. While you're at it, get the whole family to join you. Make it something special. Something more than just a family stroll. The fact is every family should experience at least one walk to remember in their lifetime. This is not just any walk. It's a walk through the lives of one, two, or more generations of the family. It's called, The Walk of Your Life.

The Walk of Your Life is about telling a story rich with details you can see, hear, touch and feel. Each story consists of a walk through a town, city, state or country with a map in hand While visiting specific locations marked on the map a written story is told about family members activity on location while walking from one spot to the other.

Too better understand the impact of such a walk I recommend following a family on such a journey. The movie is entitled "We bought a Zoo". A true story about a family that had a dire need to connect, so they did something rather odd. They bought a zoo. Learning to work together they found a way to mend their lives and recover by trying to find their place in this new life of their own choosing. Finally, the children of this young family are brought full circle as they walk through a restaurant and hear a touching story of how their father and mother met and fell in love.

Guided Tour

The Walk of Your Life gives kids a fresh opportunity to connect or reconnect with family in a way they may never have imagined. It's an opportunity to merge the present with the past and explain how the relationship of their parents or grandparents came to be. It helps them draw closer to their family while hearing their story brought to life in a way they never before experienced.  It's like opening a book rich with family history, self-discovery, nostalgia, and felicity.

The Walk of Your Life may be in the form of a guided tour of the places in town that touched the lives of the family in very special ways. Perhaps a walk that follows the weekly routine of the grandparents and parents in the family.

Map The Course

Draw a map of all the spots you or your parents frequented. Next, locate the schools they attended. The one spot they met. Now locate fond places they liked to frequent and things they did while there.

Draw lines connecting each spot together progressively as the relationship advances from acquaintance to friendship to companionship to partnership and commitment.

Tell The Story

Tell a story about a specific experience that occurred then and there. Stories that help define that moment in time. Recreate the atmosphere, sounds, smells, activities, feelings and nostalgia of the times spent there. Talk about how the relationship grew stronger, how and why feeling ran deeper and ascended to new levels.

On Location

Enter the store, parlor or office. Explain what took place there and how that experience defined the course their lives.  Perhaps it was a bookstore or mom and pop shop with the best pizza in town sizzling in the oven. Freshly baked sweet cakes and cookies that melt in your mouth.  A table in the corner of a diner where mom was asked out on the first date. A photo booth where dad and mom took their first silly photo together. A water fountain where mom and dad sat, talked and fell in love. The place they were wed. The first apartment they lived in. The window of a room in the house in which the children were conceived and so on.

The Walk of Your Life can conclude with dinner at a family restaurant that may one day be a part of the map the kids will make when they take their children on the walk of their lives.

Making Your Family History Documentary Movie

Having done my Family History Research I've accumulated quite a bit of data including video, photos, audio interviews, stories about the old days and music reminiscent of each era. And now it's time to bring it all together in presentation format.

Of the many ideas I've used to record family history one of the most enjoyable is family history documenting in photos and video. That said, I will make a documentary movie of my family history.
This lunch break project just keeps getting better.

While at first I considered attempting to pull this off from scratch using only ideas as they came to me, I later decided to take a more professional approach and learn from the masters of cinema. I closely studied a few well prepared family history documentaries presented by www.PBS.com, and revisited some very touching interviews found at tv.jw.org. Using a few well chosen documentaries of study as a visual/audio template I will script write, direct and produce the movie in similar fashion.

The Script

Using my family history blog compilation which now reads like a biographical novel I will start writing a detailed script of narration dialogue starting from the earliest years of my families history and describe the land, work, political mood, daily routine and social events my ancestors enjoyed. I will gradually introduce the next generation from birth to adulthood describing the land,  daily routine, work, political and social events experienced by each generation up to the present.

Side notes and brackets will include the titles of background music that will be played and interview snippets I will insert along the way.

As I write the script I will predetermine directorial scenes as the following example shows:
Opening Scene - A low lit room as the camera slowly moves toward a vintage living room radio.
Sounds of the radio broadcasts of the day fill the room as the camera slowly sweeps toward framed photos on the mantel.

Audio Narration

As the camera turns toward and moves out of the window a panoramic scene of the bustling city  mothers parents settled into leads into audio narration that begins to tell the family story.

As the narration progresses we slide through photos taken of the houses my mother and father lived in as children complete with street signs and then we progress through images of them as a teenagers. Audio of my mother and father telling the story of how they met, dated, courted and wed takes over.

The number of interviews outlined in the script will translate into quite a bit of dialogue. Watching only the speaker through the entire interview could prove monotonous and downright tiresome. That said, while the interviewee is talking I'll add some breakaway scenes that are descriptive of the subject at hand.

As they talk about their courtship we see video segments of how life was in those days.
Scenes of a local ice cream parlor.
A couple sharing an ice cream soda.
A circus parading down the neighborhood
A television broadcast of a local baseball game or popular entertainer of the day.

Developing and Directing Scenes

When considering the kind of footage to shoot and add to the documentary it's best to start off with some specific ideas regarding location, setting and lighting. When shooting a scene I'll allow those involved to be as relaxed and natural as possible. In some cases I will just raise the camera and let them go about their activities.

I will use similar camera angles, locations, subjects and techniques as in my visual/audio documentary templates to capture the essence of the moment in time being described by the narrator and interviewees.  The following scenes and still life visuals are required for this documentary:

1. Nostalgic era photos such as my parents childhood home, activities growing up, and
their first home after marriage and the day to day activities we enjoyed as a family.
2. Nostalgic era video such as a horse and fruit carriage, a television baseball game, entertainers and other moving pictures of the day
3. Scenes of family gatherings
4. Scenes of weddings, births, showers and graduation
5. Video of feet walking toward destinations being discussed
6. Silhouettes of faces looking out windows
7. Movie segments with scenes similar to settings or situations being described
8. Hand turning through the pages of a family album
9. Hand opening a family keepsake booklet
10. Hands cooking at stove
11. Scenes of engineers using schematics, musicians writing and playing music, trolley drivers,  grocery managers talking to store clerks.

Most of these scenes are already in my Lunch Break Family History Research Files. I have photos and video of family gatherings, weddings, births, graduation, news reels and historic events, Other scenes I will have to develop and shoot myself.

Video Equipment

Much of my video footage can be shot using a smart phone camera or tablet. Consider using some royalty free photos and video where appropriate. Creative Commons licensed video can be found at YouTube.com

As I studied other documentaries I took note of specific desired scenes, music sequences, locations and photo stills I had the equipment and competence to reproduce in my movie.

My family history documentary movie is starting to take shape, life and form. I am pulling it all together using a simple video compiler like Windows Movie Maker.

Background Music

I will use varied genres of background music for interviews depending on the type of story the interviewee is telling. When I'm shooting a spirited bubbly interview I'll use upbeat background music. Something light and jazzy. When it is a more somber and reflective interview I'll use background music that dignifies the mood.

The script will step me through the entire process of documentary movie production from beginning to a bitter-sweet conclusion. Hope you're enjoying your Lunch Break Family History Research project.  Other fun family related projects can be found using Fimark's Family Reunion Planner Social web app. Click the link found below this blog post.

Lunch Break Family History Project Research Part 3

In this third and final presentation of the Lunch Break Family History Project series, we consider some very specific ways to present those family history gems.

Preparing Data For Family History Presentation

If you're copying and/or downloading information in appropriate files on your device or laptop as you go at some point you'll want to create one running file or eBook consisting of all useful content in your research depository in chronological order.  This can be put in your Chronological Compilation file. (See previous article in this three part series for more information on file structure.)

Remember, each file you create or download and drop into your depository should have a chronological date designation in the file name such 1871_great_Illinois_migration or 1914_military_record. In addition you may wish to create sub-folders with year or period designations such as Civil War, or Post Civil War.  This will help you maintain chronological order when creating your presentation.

Online Presentations

You want to maintain a compilation of research that has been validated as an authentic part of your family history archives. One of the best ways to link and structure your notes, records, video and photos is using by way of a blog. The records can be linked and structured and presented in a very attractive way. Blogs have advanced to social application like Google Plus and Facebook and made more interactive using features like Hangouts and such.

Creative Presentations

Next consult your presentation ideas file for creative ways to present your research offline. Presentations can be in the form of a display table, wall chart, decorative photo compilation complete with notes and news clippings or some other presentation form like video. For imaginative genealogy presentation ideas visit our Fimark Genealogy Presentation Awards pages at....http://www.pinterest.com/fimarkhome/genealogy-presentation-awards.

Making Your Family Reunion Booklet

If you've wrapped up your t-shirt orders as mentioned in the previous article this would be a good time to complete your genealogy presentation for your family reunion keepsake booklet. One of our earlier reunion preparation reminders involved collecting photos, stories, genealogy research and starting on your genealogy presentation. These will go in your family reunion keepsake booklet.

1. Photos
2. Family History
3. Attendee Contact Info
4. Family Business
5. In Memoriam

Working With Family Photos

Ideal photos for the keepsake booklet are group photos taken from the previous reunion even. Others may include vintage pics, new born pics, wedding pics, retirement and anniversary pics, a well as photos taken at graduation and other honorary events including the elders of the tribe.

You will want to do one of two things with your photos.
1. Scan old photos into your computer
2. Take a picture of the photo and import them to your computer.

Now that your photos are on your computer use your photo editing tools to crop (cut-around) the images into a perfect square.

Family History

Next, from your family history files put together two paragraphs of information about your ancestry from the earliest records available.

Include full first names, middle and surnames of both father and mother, marriage dates, education, trades and employment, residents, migration and births leading up to the eldest living family member.
http://family-reunion-planner.fimark.net/family_reunion_booklet.html

Attendee Registration Roster/Database

The Family Reunion Planner Social web app includes the Attendee Registration Roster, a part of the family reunion spreadsheet. This Roster is a database for keeping attendee information such as contact information, returned survey data and t-shirt orders by person and household. You can share the database with multiple family members for real-time editing and updating. Allowing others access to the database helps improve the accuracy and expedite updates in a more timely manner much like a wiki-project.

Family Business

As you put together your attendee registration database include information regarding the various businesses owned by family members including those who sell Cosmetic products, Insurance, Real Estate, Clothing, Cars, Travel Discounts, Arts and Crafts, Event Venues and such. Family members may wish to purchase a space or whole page in the booklet to provide more details regarding the business. Proceeds go to the event or committee treasury. Use the blank page found in the booklet template for adding additional business pages.

In Memoriam

The In Memoriam section can include information from the obituary of recently deceased elders and other family members. Some like to add excerpts from a bio as well as a poem or two in this section.
http://family-reunion-planner.fimark.net/family_reunion_poems.html

Putting together your family reunion keepsake booklet can be one of the most rewarding projects associated with the event, so remember to get the family involved.

Having Fun with Family History

Life is full of surprises. One sunny day you're enjoying the golden daffodils and the brilliant display of colorful tulips while listening to the breeze ruffle the leaves of swaying trees. As chirping birds dash and swoop from limb to limb suddenly the clouds roll in and rain begins to fall.

First a sprinkle and a shower,  then it pours.  A nice surprise for the trees and grass but the rest of us gather our things together and head for shelter. Why do we run from the very thing necessary to keep us alive?

Whenever there is a severe drought nobody runs from the rain. On the contrary, they call everyone they know, they stand looking up at the sky as the rain falls on their relieved and happy faces. they soak it all up, wading in it, walking in it and laughing in it. Today? Today we run from it!

While watching it rain from the inside looking out I often think of how lush and brilliant the foliage will grow thanks to this good watering and then I think about the personal growth I strive for, a goal that has shaped my families life for three generations now.

Personal and Family Growth

When I think of the growth made it can only be defined by the results. I'm proud of my hard working wife Brenda who woke up today singing  a song as she scurried out the door on her way to serve a community of college bound youth. I'm proud of my mother and father who also have devoted themselves to providing wisdom, hope and practical assistance to the residents of our city.

I am equally proud of my son Jonathan and his wife who both do volunteer work at a local congregation helping the younger generation manage a life of turbulence. These are some of the notable things I put down in our family history logs preserved for the next generation to come. But that's not all that made the history books. There were sunny days and cloudy days, droughts and surprise showers, stooping lower to dig deeper and reach higher with many lessons learned along the way. Best of all a lot of laughter and spontaneous fun. These times deserve to be recorded as well.

Having Fun With Family History

And speaking of family history logs It's always best to keep a log, journal or blog of your family life including genealogy, community contributions, life growing up. But family history does not always have to be cut-and-dry.

Add some life to it by including some funny photos of baby in a bath full of soap suds or the toddler frantically chasing bubbles in the park. Include silly pranks like dumping water on dads head while sleeping on the porch or baby's first attempt to feed himself while making a complete mess of what was a perfectly prepared spaghetti dinner.

Add some light anecdotal stories from family interviews and include some excerpts from humorous text messages to and from family members. Step back in time to yesteryear and take a stroll on the funny side of life. Collect bridesmaids dresses and tux worn over the years. Remember the dances or the days the kids decided to take over the kitchen and make dinner? Record the secret shower serenades. There's nothing like viewing photo stories and video of failed attempts at inventions, recipes and art compared to the look of glee when after many attempts they finally succeed.

Presenting Your History At Family Reunions

While family reunions often feature traditional activities such as recipe swaps, a family music list, familiar stories and outside games, many times families intend on digging deep into history and sharing it in an organized meaningful and exciting way. But good intentions are often met with distractions and a project long left undone. What's needed is a goal, some organizing and inspiration.

Add a list of all attendees to your keepsake booklet. The Family Reunion Planner includes the Attendee Registration Roster which is a database for keeping attendee information such as contact information, returned survey data and t-shirt orders by person and household.

Now the Planner provides an attendee application that gives multiple family members open access to the same attendee roster. The online attendee database allows family members or committee members to update the database in real-time. Allowing others access to the database helps improve the accuracy and expedite updates in a more timely manner not unlike a wiki-project.

Family Business

Add a family business page to your keepsake booklet. As you put together your attendee registration database include information regarding the various businesses owned by family members including those who sell Avon products and such.
