Family Reunion Invitation Goes To 77 Million Relatives

I was amazed when I stumbled upon this story about a man embarking on a family reunion involving over 77 million relatives. How will he pull this off? Where will they meet? I admit, there is a belief in my circle of colleagues that one day we will all have enough information about our family lineage to know concisely how we are all related. A world chronological family tree, if you will, connecting us all both by blood line and the logs of history.

Today the closest thing we have to a world history and chronological log is the compilation of books we call the Holy Bible. It takes a few weeks to read the entire Bible, But it would take a lifetime to read and study the whole compilation of the book of man. How would one begin? The fact is we already have begun, just read the Bible and you will see an ancient family tree masterpiece of considerable proportions. But many have tried to take that chronology to the next level in an effort to unite the world of today. How so?

Enter Geni.com and MyHeritage. These genealogy tracking tools and family tree builders have made significant strides towards establishing wide ancestral connections. Interestingly these connections involve thousands of genealogy researchers formed over a relatively short period of time.

These applications create family trees with roots and branches extending to other family trees ultimately connecting scores of family groups together thus proving that we are all connected to a diverse and densely populated stream of cousins, nieces and nephews leading to oceans of races, cultures and beliefs. Amazed?

Consider A.J. Jacobs, satirical author of a number of books regarding his laughable self-exploration fails and successes. Jacobs took on the study of family lineage in order to rediscover and define himself in this complex world of cultural diversity. What did he find? Jacobs, a man of Jewish decent made genealogy connects to thousands of non-jewish relatives from Gwyneth Paltrow to Barak Obama and beyond. Who would think? As a matter of fact, by the time his research was done, he found that he was related to some 77 million people around the globe. He's already sent out invitations to a 2015 family reunion. A record family affair if he pulls it off. His basis; To promote human kindness.

Unveiling a common kindred cord beyond racial and cultural barriers to make people stop and reason on the value of human kindness is a noble endeavor indeed. Proof of the words I often heard spoken over satellite radio by Maya Angelou herself, "We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike."

Still, is blood line all that is needed to appeal to our humanity and unite this diverse world or is there some deeper core in our being that needs to be tapped, a spiritual commonality perhaps? That said, there are those who consider themselves related simply on the basis of a shared hope and set of basic principles they personally choose to live by. "Love conquers all." "Be peaceable with all men." "Do to others as you would have them do to you." "Freely forgive." Certainly nothing complicated in this set of principles. And what wonders they work out in our relationship with others both in the home and those we interact with in everyday life. Once the ultimate set of principles is found and lived by, we will not hesitate to admit that we are all related in every possible way.

Congratulations Jacobs on embarking upon a worldwide family reunion event. Suffice it to say the world is watching to see how this project will unfold. While our approach to uniting a diverse world may be very different, we may share a similar sentiment. "Peace to all men of goodwill."

8 June Reunion Planning Reminders

School is out and fun family reunion activities are just around the corner.  In the next few weeks many of you will be plunging cannon ball right into your family reunion event. Some will be traveling back home for a traditional family reunion while others will be breaking new ground with creative themes like a full fledged family reunion cruise to remote exotic islands. Others will be donning colorful family culture costumes with taste buds ready for a family reunion food fest.

We would like to remind you of a few follow up tasks to making your event flow smoothly:

1. Make certain all members have their t-shirts ordered and delivered. (See the timeline
checklist in Fimark's Family Reunion Planner web app.) Point them to the t-shirt ordering website if they have not yet ordered  t-shirts.

For great family reunion t-shirt design ideas go to http://www.zazzle.com/zzibcnet*/

2. Follow up with department heads and make sure everyone has what they need including materials and supplies. (See the materials and supplies checklist in the Family Reunion Planner)

3. Remind them of their responsibilities. (See the departmental worksheets in the Family Reunion Planner web app)

4. Some family members may have recently run into a snag attending. Render support where needed.

5. Follow up with vendors and facility managers to make sure you will receive
the timely quality services you expect. (See the timeline checklist in the Family
Reunion Planner web app)

6. Make certain family members know how to reach their destination. A few
families tend to get lost traveling to every event. Send them directions via
email or post mail. Have them follow a capable traveler or have someone help the setup GPS navigation.

7. Get help wrapping up your final tasks. No need to do it all yourself. Invite
a couple of extra hands over and put in a long night completing tasks.

8. Be sure to give yourself a day or two of rest before the big event.

How To Blow A Gazillion Gigantic Bubbles

If you ever wondered what activity your kids and grand kids would enjoy playing for hours and hours eventually leading to a long slumber at nap time-  it's can be summed up in to simple words. Blowing bubbles. No not spit bubbles. We're talking about fragrant clean and colorful soap bubbles. My granddaughter loves playing with bubbles in the park. What child does not go crazy trying to catch and pop them.

What's interesting about playing with bubbles is that children use almost every muscle in their body eyeing, chasing, twisting, turning, falling and getting back up while laughing hysterically when a flying bubble comes their way. So what will keep them chasing those bubbles for hours? A constant flow of tiny and man-sized bubbles, that what. How to blow a gazillion gigantic bubbles without blowing the wind out of yourself? The secret art of blowing bubbles is not so secret after all. It's all in the wind and wrist. Of course you want to have the right equipment. Two sticks and heavy absorbent string or rope, a bucket of bubble solution and your ready to to go.

On Your Special Day

There was a song we played at our family reunions a few years back. It was about the relationship between fathers and their daughters.

"Fathers, be good to your daughters Daughters will love like you do.
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too."

The lyrics impress upon us that we as fathers teach our daughters how to love often without even knowing it. How do you know if you're getting through to them? Many heart to heart talks are needed.  Sharing experiences, lessons learned and being honest about the best course to take is essential. Consider the unspoken message our own thoughts and actions express regarding love, women, our wives and our daughters mother. Teach them the basic principle of "Honor".

Demonstrate Love Creatively

"Honor Your Mother and Father." These words should be the bases of the first lessons regarding relationships taught a child when growing up. Honor is given for specific reasons. Explaining those reasons based on the roles fulfilled in the household is essential.

But how to you go beyond token practices of honor? Consider getting your children involved in thinking up creative ways to show honor, love and appreciation in the household making it a way of thinking and loving. When children learn to demonstrate love and honor in creative ways they are happier more well adjusted people. Even when the act itself triggers little emotion, the fond memory of accumulated acts over time holds great weight.

Being Good To Our Sons

Brenda and I took our children on many vacations to beach resorts, theme parks and Disney World.  When I asked my sons what experiences they enjoyed most in childhood they both said is was the walks and talks we took to the library, while fishing or looking for specimens in a nearby stream. These little things meant the world to them. During these walks I shared my experiences, lessons learned and fascination for creation with them. This bond made them want to love, honor and comply with their fathers wishes.

Being Good To Our Daughters

In most cases, but not all, the best interpreter of how we feel about ourselves and others is the good our sons and daughters actually do as a result of our influence. The quality of their relationships and the love they give says it all. While their are a few exceptions, usually it all has a way of going full circle. The love we give is the love we receive. We do ourselves justice by being good to our daughters and sons.

On Your Special Day

Last year I composed a musical score, "On Your Special Day", for a family drama, It centered around a celebrated relationship between a father and his daughter. On the eve of his daughters wedding day a father sits at his piano reflecting on giving his daughter away. The score would carry us through the life of the child leading to the father daughter dance. This music video of real people and events in my life conceptualizes that.

I had the pleasure of playing the musical score and similar video for a group of 60 last month. The tears and smiles told me it struck a cord in them as well.

Spring Reunion Planning Reminders

Community Gardens in Baltimore - Photographer Mark Askew

Here's a shout out to all you family reunion planners on the west coast as well as those in the southern states and Canada. Take time to take it all in. Grab your kids and kiss them. Hold your wife and thank her. Call your mother and tell her how much you appreciate her sacrifices. Take the family out to dinner this week and stop to smell the flowers or watch a sweet sunset while playing your favorite tunes. You'll be surprised to know that children remember the little things most when they get older.

A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood

It was a beautiful weekend here on the east coast. The sun, simply brilliant. Brenda and I went to a beautiful community garden not far from our home. There were just about as many people there as the tulips. And the rich colorful tulips this year were amazingly breathtaking. For a fun tulip garden show just go to my Pinterest page called Tulip Love. The first six photos uploaded were taken by me at the community garden.

It was a special month of event planning for us. The events succeeded in touching many hearts not to mention our own. First there was the Bible Drama for kids completed just in time for the memorial season. Total viewers 60 so far. Then there was the showing of a fond farewell video we made for a couple we've grown to love. An audience of 42. Lot's of tears and laughter. I think we laughed most at the fact that we were crying. No embarrassment, no regrets, just good memories.

Spring has certainly sprung for family reunion planning and this is the perfect time to catch up on those action items on your 'to do list'. So what's the best way to go about doing that?

Communication Essentials

Communication is essential to planning, organizing and managing any successful event. That said, consult your family reunion planning app, Fimark's Family Reunion Planner Social, for details and reminders and follow up with those assigned to various departments using the social apps contact icon strip located at the top of the reunion planning app. The icon strip includes access to Facebook Chat, Skype and Google Hangouts.  It's a good idea to have periodic group discussions, so arrange a followup conference with all department heads and determine if there is a need for supplies, solutions or additional support.

When conferencing make good use of the departmental worksheets the reunion planning app provides. Read the instructions and check off tasks completed.

Other Helpful Reminders

If additional funds are needed this would also be a good time to discuss holding a fund raiser. Remember the recommended personal family reunion website has several fundraising features so keep your family reunion website up and running until well after the event and beyond. Find recommended personal reunion websites on this blog page.

Making Your Family Reunion Booklet

If you've wrapped up your t-shirt orders as mentioned in the previous article this would be a good time to complete your genealogy presentation for your family reunion keepsake booklet. One of our earlier reunion preparation reminders involved collecting photos, stories, genealogy research and starting on your genealogy presentation. These will go in your family reunion keepsake booklet.

1. Photos
2. Family History
3. Attendee Contact Info
4. Family Business
5. In Memoriam

Working With Family Photos

Ideal photos for the keepsake booklet are group photos taken from the previous reunion even. Others may include vintage pics, new born pics, wedding pics, retirement and anniversary pics, a well as photos taken at graduation and other honorary events including the elders of the tribe.

You will want to do one of two things with your photos.
1. Scan old photos into your computer
2. Take a picture of the photo and import them to your computer.

Now that your photos are on your computer use your photo editing tools to crop (cut-around) the images into a perfect square.

Family History

Next, from your family history files put together two paragraphs of information about your ancestry from the earliest records available.

Include full first names, middle and surnames of both father and mother, marriage dates, education, trades and employment, residents, migration and births leading up to the eldest living family member.
http://family-reunion-planner.fimark.net/family_reunion_booklet.html

Attendee Registration Roster/Database

The Family Reunion Planner Social web app includes the Attendee Registration Roster, a part of the family reunion spreadsheet. This Roster is a database for keeping attendee information such as contact information, returned survey data and t-shirt orders by person and household. You can share the database with multiple family members for real-time editing and updating. Allowing others access to the database helps improve the accuracy and expedite updates in a more timely manner much like a wiki-project.

Family Business

As you put together your attendee registration database include information regarding the various businesses owned by family members including those who sell Cosmetic products, Insurance, Real Estate, Clothing, Cars, Travel Discounts, Arts and Crafts, Event Venues and such. Family members may wish to purchase a space or whole page in the booklet to provide more details regarding the business. Proceeds go to the event or committee treasury. Use the blank page found in the booklet template for adding additional business pages.

In Memoriam

The In Memoriam section can include information from the obituary of recently deceased elders and other family members. Some like to add excerpts from a bio as well as a poem or two in this section.
http://family-reunion-planner.fimark.net/family_reunion_poems.html

Putting together your family reunion keepsake booklet can be one of the most rewarding projects associated with the event, so remember to get the family involved.
