"Sometimes you don't appreciate the value of a moment until it becomes a memory." |
Truer words have never been spoken. Family is constantly in transition. Precious ones must leave us while new ones arrive and fill our hearts with joy. That's why I like to take photos and video of our youngest and eldest family members in a setting that speak volumes about their interests, traits, qualities, abilities.
I catch them singing and dancing, cooking and crafting. I listen while they're telling stories and I try to ask thoughtful questions to open the unspoken pages of their lives. I especially love to see their reaction when a question triggers a fond memory. As we turn the pages of their regained memories together, to see their eyes light up and their smile gleam makes it all so worthwhile.
Why not go for walks and talk about life from their perspective. It's a good idea to let them know that you were watching and listening by repeating their thoughts in context at appropriate times. And at the end of the day write down some of what was said and the lessons learned.
If they were caught on video laughing, joking, crafting or having an aha moment set it to background music and see the magic take you away. When you come back the notes, photos and video a few years later it will have so much more meaning than you ever knew it could.
